Shall DSA endorse Eugene V. Debs for President of the United States?

Resolved, that the Democratic Socialists of America endorses Eugene V. Debs — founder of the American Railway Union, leader of the 1894 Pullman strike, five-time Socialist Party of America candidate for President, and Convict No. 9653, who polled nearly a million votes in 1920 from a cell in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary after his conviction under the Espionage Act for speaking against the war — for President of the United States;

Resolved, that the campaign shall carry the platform he ran on: collective ownership of the railroads, mines, and utilities; the eight-hour day and the abolition of child labor; industrial unionism as the engine of working-class power; equal suffrage; amnesty for political prisoners and repeal of the Espionage Act; and unconditional opposition to imperialist war; and

Resolved, that the campaign be conducted in his spirit — “while there is a lower class, I am in it; while there is a criminal element, I am of it; while there is a soul in prison, I am not free” — organizing the working class rather than courting donors, and that this endorsement may be withdrawn by a subsequent vote of the membership. (Draft test language — Debs, 1855–1926, stands in for an eventual nominee.)

At the national convention Los Angeles elects 64 delegates and 6 alternates (2025 apportionment, 1:60 and 1:10). How this is counted (expanded count): delegates are decided by a Scottish STV count for 3 seats. The same ballots are then recounted for 4 seats — anyone elected in the recount who is not already a delegate becomes an alternate, in order of election.
